How much mileage can you get from a few yards of fabric you bought to make skirts? Um, lots!
So far, from these beautiful Heather Bailey prints, I have made skirts for myself, pants for Lulu, last weekend I made this wall-hanging for our home, and I still have leftovers enough to save for a future patchwork project!
I had never done applique before, and this project was completely unplanned. My 'pyjamas-and-ideas' Sunday, which I had planned to spend writing some notes about yearly and seasonal celebrations I wish to introduce into our little family, suddenly turned into a 'mama's making a wall-hanging for the house' afternoon.
I'm not quite sure how that happened, but it was fun!
I got the idea from this wonderful book, by Amanda Blake Soule. At first, I was thinking I might make a banner like the one featured on the cover, but then, upon flicking through the book, I came upon her memory tree quilt, and decided to try something like that instead.
The project was a little fiddly, but not at all difficult. I simply cut a rectangle out of an old thrifted sheet I had stashed away, and appliqued straight onto that.
It would have been simpler had I used double-sided fusible interfacing, but I had none, and since there is no Sunday trading where I am in Perth, I made do with single-sided interfacing. I simply folded it in half so that both sides stuck.
I found an old bamboo stake out in the garden, which I cut to size and used to hang it on the wall.
Yes, it's very bright, isn't it? But I'm liking it! It really cheers up the rather dark corner of my dining room where it now hangs. And what's better, it's hiding a very ugly electricity box behind it!!
So, now that I've tried my hand at applique for the first time, and enjoyed it, I already have ideas for more projects churning around in my head..
Watch this space!
What have you been working on lately? I'd love to take a look! Please post a link in comments if you'd like to share your project!
